Breeding Sheep

Just a couple of families forward this week following the rough weather over the weekend and start of the week with many holding off until next week. There is certainly plenty of people in the market looking for sheep. An aged Rough ewe with twins sold to £75 and Cheviot ewe with a single to £88 from Fred and Tracey Carr of Nissan Huts.
Prime Hoggs

A smaller entry of prime hoggs forward for today’s sale with some better quality hoggs on offer today. A market average of 172p/kg was achieved and 39kg-45kg hoggs sold to a market average of 180p/kg. Better type of Beltex and Texel export lambs were selling in excess of 200p/kg topping at 212p/kg twice from George Harryman of Hawkshead and Andrew Butler of Hambleton. Heavy weight Continental and Suffolk hoggs were eagerly bid for today selling to a top of £90.50 from J Bargh and Son of North Farm at 50kg with those heavy weight hoggs regularly selling £30 to £35 above their weight. Mule hoggs sold to £81.50 for 48kg from J & CG Redmayne of Samlesbury. Well fleshed Herdwick hoggs sold to £79 from Messrs Hodgson of Rydal weighing 42kg.

Cast Sheep

A smaller entry of cast sheep forward today sold to a stronger trade with signs that the trade continues to improve week on week as numbers begin to tighten. The trade sold to a top of £130 for a pure Texel Ewe from RJ & YL Willison of Cinderbarrow, with Texel and Suffolk ewes from J Woodburn and Partners of Ulverston selling to £109 and £105 respectively. Plenty of those stronger Continental and Suffolk Ewes were selling over £90. Big fit Mule ewes sold over £80 regularly and topping at £85 from W Garnett and Son of Milnthorpe and plenty of Mule ewes around the £70 mark depending on quality. Horned ewes sold to a top of £63 for Swaledales from NJ Strickland of Whinfell and £61 for Roughs from Colin Bateman of Docker.
