Store Cattle

The strong Store Cattle trade continued at Lancaster with a couple of fresh faces around the ring today. The trade topped at £1,450 for Limousin bullocks from PM & ST Entwistle of Abbeystead with Charolais bullocks selling to £1,400 from H Chapman & Son of Millbeck. Native cattle saw Angus bullocks top at £1,380 from EJ Ward & Sons of Intack Farm.

Once again, nearly 20% of the cattle forward sold in excess of £1,200 with Heifers selling to a top of £1,220 Charolais from CD & HL Mason of Mearsbeck farm. Dairy bred cattle saw Norwegian Red bullocks sell to £1,150 from JM & AG Swarbrick of Out Rawcliffe. Bullocks sold to a market average of £996 with heifers averaging £984.

OTM Cattle

A smaller entry of Cast Cows and OTM Cattle today selling to an even stronger trade, there is such a strong cast trade at the moment that farmers are really advised to take advantage of it. A market average of 118p/kg was achieved with dairy cows selling to a market average of 114p/kg.

Cast stock bulls sold to £1,253 for Bazadais bulls from EW & A Bradshaw of Stalmine. Beef cows sold to 144.5p/kg from D & D Huddleston of Botton Hall with dairy cows topping at 134.5p/kg from J Burrow & Son of Tunsteads.

Calves and Stirks

The weekly sale of calves, which included the monthly of stirks, had an entry of over 100 forward. A good entry of beef and dairy bred stirks forward, with the majority being between 5 and 9 months old, sold to a packed ring of buyers from throughout the north of England.

Beef bred steers and bulls were in the strongest demand selling to a top of £685 for Hereford steers from E & SM Halpin of Barrow in Furness. June born Limousin bulls sold to a top of £670 from DJ Townley of Whinney Carr Farm with Native bred cattle as good to sell with August born Angus bullocks selling to £660 from M & E Forshaw of Longridge with plenty of July/August better beef bullocks and bulls selling over £600.

A good number of black and white bullocks in the market saw June born bullocks sell to £360 from J & CW Metcalfe of Quernmore. The strong stirk trade saw heifers top at £550 for June born Limousins from J & CW Metcalfe of Quernmore and Angus heifers born in August selling to £540 from JH Parker of Slaidburn.

A good entry of calves forward saw the trade top at £400 and £385, beating many local centres, for British Blue Bulls from MJ Fell of Newton with all blue bulls forward averaging £347, once again, beating local centres.

British blue heifers sold to a top of £350 from MJ Fell of Newton. Strong native calves were eagerly bid for topping at £350 from FW Rhodes and Son of Barrow Greaves. There was a young entry of black and white calves today with all forward today under one month old with better rearing types selling between £60 and £80.
