Spring Lambs

What a difference a week makes for prime lambs at Lancaster. A big jump in trade saw lambs selling to a market average of 170p/kg and vendors leaving chuffed with their trade. A new buyer the market and a returning buyer to the ring saw strong demand for lambs. Lambs best to sell this week were Continental and Suffolk lambs, well-finished lambs weighing between 40kg and 46kg, with demand for well-finished heavy weights as well. The trade topped at £100 for Texel lambs from JW & SE Drinkwater of Conder Mill with 50kg lambs. Plenty of pens of lambs selling into the seventies and eighties. Beltex lambs sold in excess of 200p/kg topping at 215p/kg from Ian T Richardson of Goosnargh or to £87.50. Mules sold to £70 for 45kg lambs from WM Pye of Tarnwater.

Cast Sheep

Well-fleshed cast ewes remain good to sell and in demand. The trade topped at £99 for heavy, fit Continental ewes from EE Thornton & Sons of Downlands with heavy weight Mules from the same home selling to £75. Larger Continental ewes sold into the eighties with bigger Mule ewes selling over the seventy pound mark and smaller types in the sixties and leaner types selling for less.
