Lancaster Hill Fair Day - Saturday 3rd October

Posted Saturday, 01 October 2016, 3.51pm

The annual Hill Fair day at Lancaster, which had all types of Breeding sheep and Rams forward plus store lambs, was the biggest sale to date with more entries than seen before. A sale that is popular with both vendors and buyers with stock to suit all requirements.

The pre-sale show was expertly judged by Paul Whitton of Burneside. The Bluefaced Leicester class was won by JR & J Gorst of Appletree Farm with a shearling ram. A massive line up of terminal sire ram lambs in front of the judge took much deliberation with an entry of good quality ram lambs on offer, the red rosette was awarded to Megan Woodhouse of Middle Cragg with a strong stylish Suffolk Ram Lamb. A nice line up of Mule gimmer lambs saw Paul and Raymond Ayrton of Yates Farm awarded first and second prize in the class.

Breeding sheep sold to a very selective trade with it being late in the season now for Mule and Continental ewes and shearlings with many buyers now full. One crop Mule ewes sold to £120 from PD Anderton of Wyre Farm with Texel 2 crop sheep from the same home selling to £130. A run of pedigree Texel gimmer shearlings from Jack Davies of Ormskirk sold to £170 and £165 with James Sanderson of Halton selling a couple of pure Texel gimmer shearlings to £185. Texel x gimmer shearlings sold to £120 from Charlie Carter of Poplar Farm.

There was a strong Mule gimmer lamb trade with the majority of the lambs forward being runners, sold to an average of £79.75. The trade topped from Andrew and Lisa Huddleston of Over Houses selling gimmer lambs to £116 and £100.
An entry of over 100 breeding rams forward sold to a selective trade as seen throughout the season with good powerful rams, with good conformation excellent to sell and the others selling to their value with Bluefaced Leicester shearling rams selling to £280 from JR & J Gorst of Appletree Farm. Bluefaced Leicester ram lambs sold to £240 JW & SE Drinkwater of Conder Mill and Texel shearling rams sold to a top of £500 from T & CM Kelsall of Brown Brook with plenty of strong rams selling around the £400 mark. Ram lambs sold to a top of £220 from Megan Woodhouse of Middle Cragg.

A strong entry of 750 store lambs forward for the sale created plenty of interest. Short keep Texel lambs sold to £62.50 from J Whewell of Wyresdale Park with Suffolks from AR Gornall of Crossthwaite selling to £62.50. Plenty of pens of strong lambs sold in the late fifties with Mule lambs selling to £57 from J Whewell of Wyresdale Park and plenty of mules selling in the mid-fifties. Cheviot lambs sold to £47.50 from KM & KJ Curwen of Marshaw Farm.
