Store Cattle to £1,420 at Lancaster

Store Cattle

A quieter week this week at Lancaster with over 400 cattle going through the ring. Plenty of well fleshed strong cattle forward today having taken advantage of the good weather over the previous week with animals certainly looking in better form. A sharper trade with one or two faces around the ring that we haven’t seen for a while. Six bullocks sold for £1,400 or more topping at £1,420 from R & DM Rossall & Son of Abrahams Farm with a British Blue.an impressive pen of four Limousin bullocks from Robin and Margaret Dodgson of Kilburn house sold to £1,400 with J & O Galbraith of Endmoor also selling a Charolais steer to £1,400. Plenty of well fleshed short term bullocks selling in excess of £1,200 with numerous breaking the £1,300 barrier. Angus bullocks sold to a top of £1,380 from H Birkett and Son of Overton with Angus bullocks from the same home selling to £1,250. Heifers sold to a top of £1,240 for British Blues from R & DM Rossall & Son of Abrahams Farm. Holstein Friesian bullocks sold to a top of £1,150 from J Lamb of Old Glasson with a Holstein Friesian bullocks forward selling to a an average of £741.

OTM Cattle

Once again an entry of one hundred over thirty month cattle forward at Lancaster, all types of cows selling to a sharper trade with one or two fresh faces around the ring, which is always good to see. A very lean entry of cows forward as to be expected for the time of year as many look to clear out ready for laying in. Over thirty month heifers and steers eagerly bid for topping at 179.5ppk from R & S Mitchell of Greenaways with a Limousin heifer. Cast cows topped at 174.5ppk for a Limousin cow from JR & A Thornton of Coventry farm. An overall market average of 94.5ppk reflecting more in the entry of cattle forward today.

Calves and Stirks

A smaller entry of just shy of 40 calves forward this week sold to a continue strong trade with once again a busy ring of buyers at Lancaster. Plenty of demand for beef calves with a shortage of calves for the number of buyers in the ring with more calves needed each week. British Blue bull calves sold to a top of £385 JM & MH France of Newhouse Farm with Angus bull calves from the same good home selling to £285. Angus bull and heifer calves sold to a top of £300 from Wallbank Farms of Abbeystead. Friesian bull calves from the same good home sold to a top of £180.

A selection of weanling black and white calves from Jones of Sandvilla sold to a top of £185 with other regularly selling around the £170 mark.

Store Lambs

A full ring of people for the store lambs saw a strong trade throughout with an entry of long keep lambs with majority not going to be ready until into the New Year. Trade topped at £63.50 from Ripley st Thomas with a pen of Texel’s with lambs from the same home selling to £59. Plenty of pens of lambs in the mid to late fifties with Mule lambs selling to a top of £52 from PD Pye of Marl House.
