J36 Lakeland Fair - Saturday 22nd October

Posted Saturday, 22 October 2016, 12.32pm

The "Lakeland fair" end of season sale of all types of breeding sheep and rams had a catalogued entry of 1,647 breeding sheep and 173 breeding rams. A sale that is continuing to grow each year and was fantastic to have a ring side packed to the rafters of customers.

The horned and hill going ewes sold to a very mixed trade with Swaledale and Herdwick ewes in strong demand and selling to a good trade with the trade for Rough Fell ewes very selective. As always, strong ewes were in strong demand and good to sell. Herdwick Gimmer Shearlings sold to a top price of £78 from G Armstrong of High Bethicar with all Herdwick Shearlings averaging £70.15 with Herdwick Gimmer lambs selling to £65 from Dave Moreland of Tebay. Rough Fell gimmer lambs sold to £68 from BR Harrison of Windermere with Rough ewes selling to a top of £86 from J Wood of Broadmire, all Rough Fells were selling shy of £60. Cheviot gimmer lambs were very good to sell topping at £80 and averaging just short of £70.

The show and sale of Swaledale rams had a catalogued entry of 27, the pre-sale show was very kindly judged by Rod Dixon of Longsleddale, whom we thank for his time and expertise. A strong entry of ten shearling tups out to show saw J Hunter of Galloper Park win the shearling class and then go onto take the championship. The reserve championship was awarded to Steve Watson of Old School with a five shear home bred ram. A strong trade for the tups forward with most buyers and on lookers forward to date for the Swaledale section of the sale. The trade sold to a top of £380 for the champion from J Hunter of Galloper Park with a 100% clearance rate for Swaledale rams.

There was plenty of interest in the upland and hill going tup breed section with Cheviots selling to £450 and £420 from TW bell of Hill Top with plenty of cheviot tups selling in the three hundreds. Leicester tups sold to £280 from John Cook of Moss Howe with all Leicester tups keenly bid for.
