The annual show and sale of Swaledale breeding sheep had a larger entry of just shy of 3,000. The trade saw Swaledale gimmer shearlings best types sell to equally strong trade as last year with lesser types harder to sell then previous year.

Swaledale ewes where eagerly bid for with plenty of old and new buyers around the ring. Top pens maybe slightly easier but middle and lower pens equally as strong trader if not slightly stronger than previous year with many consignors averaging similar if not more than previous year.

One of the strongest entries for the show of Swaledale drafts with ten pens forward in front of judges Harry and Geoffrey Gass of Bewcastle. The first prized pen was awarded to E & A Wear of Grove Farm with a pen of two crop ewes. The shearling pen was won by JA Alderson of Barras Farm. E & A Wear of Grove Farm went onto win the overall champion with their pen of two crops.

The trade topped at £185 for the champion pen E & A Wear of Grove Farm selling to B & H Wilson of Ashtead with gimmer shearlings twice selling to £155 firstly from JA Alderson of Barras Farm with the first prized pen and MP Capstick of High Lane with the second prized pen. There were plenty of pens selling in excess of £120. Swaledale shearlings sold to an average of £101 with Swaledale ewes selling to an average of £97.39. Swaledale gimmer lambs sold to a top of £71 from J Hunter of Tebay and an overall average of £52.

Ian Atkinson Auctioneer, commented on the sale “A very pleasing sale with vendors leaving pleased with their trade especially with the current prime lamb trade and being one of the earlier draft ewe sales.”
