Posted Tuesday, 30 June 2015, 4.16pm

Many farmers were taking advantage of the fine weather to make hay. Also with the the reports of a national over-supply of lambs to the market, vendors were, understandably, cautious. Those who drew lambs were rewarded with a firmer trade, producing an average of 156p/kg. This was ahead of expectations for the day.

Prime Lambs

A top price of £79 was achieved for a smart Texel lamb from J E Wightman, with Suffolk x lambs reaching £76.50 from the same home.

Well bred lambs continue to lead the market, topping at 184p/kg for Beltex x from J R Armitstead, with first cross Suffolks and Texels generally 155p/kg-160p/kg.

Prime Hoggs

Still a few prime hoggs around this week, selling to £71.

Cast Sheep sold to £105, for a pen of Texel ewes from E Dodgson, with other heavy ewes £85-£95. Mule ewes were generally £67-£74, with hill ewes £75 for Rough Fell and £76 for Cheviots. Cast rams were in short supply with more needed to meet demand.
