Monday Prime Stock & Breeding Sheep

Prime Hoggs

A good number of hoggs forward in Lancaster for the time of year, with decent well finished hoggs in strong demand and good to sell. The overall average was 165ppk with better finished hoggs selling 180ppk plus.

Spring Lambs

Another trade in keeping with other local centres at Lancaster as a lot of Hoggs still available on the market and many big meat companies yet to switch over to spring lambs. Better types of lambs defiantly a bit brighter this morning with a bumper entry of 590 forward. Better types of continental lambs sold easily between 210ppk and 220ppk topping at 227ppk for Texel lambs from MJ Ayrton of Cockerham. Decent bred first cross lambs out of mule’s sold around 200ppk.

Cast Sheep

The cast sheep trade remains strong at Lancaster with Texel ram selling to £121 from DM Cardwell of Moss Side Farm with Continental ewes selling around the £100 regular way. Big mule ewes sold £95 plus topping at £98 from GS Lander of Warrington with smaller ewes £86 plus with all mule ewes averaging £88.67. A few more hill ewes about, with Cheviot x ewes selling to £78 from WI & H Gorst of Cragg Farm and Dalesbred ewes making £75.

Spring Breeding Sheep Sale

A smaller entry of Breeding Sheep forward this week following last week’s spring show. Majority of the entry was Mule Hoggs with lambs that sold to a top price of £178 for strong Mule hoggs from GB Holt of Rossendale with others from RM Wilson of Selside selling to £170 with others easily selling over £160. An entry of Mule Shearlings from Bill Pinder of Newton in Bowland sold to £192 and £190 suckling twins with mule shearlings suckling singles sold to £150.

Prime Bulls

A larger entry of prime bulls forward this week sold to a strong trade especially with another drop in deadweight vendors left well satisfied with their trade. Dairy bred British Blue bulls sold to 184.5ppk and 174.5ppk from S & BM Lawrenson & Son of Northwoods Farm with Stabilisers from JA & R Geldard of Low Foulshaw selling to 159.5ppk.
