Easter Monday Sale of Primestock and Breeding Sheep

Prime Hoggs

Following on from an increase in price for Prime Hoggs at the end of the previous week Lancaster enjoyed a better trade than the previous week with more numbers forward. A sale day entry of 737 forward sold to an average of 197ppk with SQQ hoggs averaging 203ppk. Better quality texel x hoggs sold to 224ppk from Andrew Butler of Hambleton. Heavy weight hoggs also a stronger trade than the previous week with a few pens breaking the one hundred pound barrier topping at £103 from Cardwell Farms of Stalmine.

Spring Lambs

A few more spring lambs in the market this week with an entry of 36 forward. Lambs forward ranged from 33kg to 48kg and averaged 248ppk with buyers preferring lambs between 39kg and 44kg. It was a pen of 45kg Charollais lambs from JA & R Geldard & Sons of Low Foulshaw that took top price of £118.

Cast Sheep

The fantastic cast ewe trade continues with all classes of sheep easily as good if not slightly better. Cast ewes sold to a top of £145 for Continentals from RS & IM Kellet of Mill House with others from the same home achieving £135. Big Continental ewe easily sold around the £130 area. Mule ewes sold to a top of £113 from Andrew Wilson of Burrow heights with plenty of fit mules around £100. Horned ewes sold to a top of £74 from WI & AM Atkinson of Holme House. Cast sheep sold to an average of £89.96.

Spring Breeding Sheep Sale

The Easter bank holiday Monday sale of Sheep with lambs at foot still had a very respectable entry of 68 families or 184 head forward. A varied entry forward this week with continental ewes suckling strong Beltex lambs from Harry Woods of Dutton selling to £225 with ewes and singles from the same home achieving £195. Young continental ewes suckling twins from Matthew Heap of Burns Farm sold to £200. An overall average of £62 per life was achieved.
