Store Cattle

A straight trade for the store cattle forward at Lancaster. It was in keeping with other markets with numbers less than previous weeks. The well fleshed short keep cattle a good trade and the young long term cattle good too sell and in demand but the in-between cattle harder to place this week. Steers sold to a top of £1370 of from W Garnett & Son of Ackenthwaite with a pair of Limousins. British Blue heifers sold to a top of £1200 from JD & GM Bracken of Greenlands Farm.

OTM Cattle

A smaller entry of cast cows forward this week then previous week but still over one hundred in the market with the trade in keeping with over local markets. The purchasers are struggling to sell the meat at the other end and large quantity of cast cows nationwide has led to the slump in trade. An entry once again mainly consisting of dairy cattle. Black and white cows sold to 139.5ppk from J Bland of Arnside Tower with plenty of well fleshed 115 and 122 pence per kilogram. All black and white cows sold to an overall average of 87ppk.

Rearing Calves and Stirks

An entry of 61 calves and stirks this morning put before a full complement of buyers. Beef calves a touch easier on the week, topping at £395 for a blocky Blue Bull from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall. Other blues sold to £390 from F & E Harrison, Wray. A run of Simmentals from Eddy Newsham, Galgate sold to £290 for fortnight old bulls. Black and White calves to a top of £142 from Allan and Thomas Ward, best calves in excess of £100 with nice fleshy rearing calves £62-£85, overall average of £68.43 for all black and whites.
Stirks saw the best trade with 19 Black and Whites forward from various vendors. Trade topped at £295 for a trio of 5month Friesians from A & E Clarkson, Thurnham, others to £250 for 4month olds from R Gregory, Cabus. More beef bred stirks needed to meet buyers demand.
