Posted Monday, 26 October 2015, 3.55pm

On Monday 26th October North West Auctions held the dispersal sale of the Cragyeat Herd of pedigree Holsteins on behalf of Brian & Diane Barnes. A ringside full of both local and travelled buyers ensured all classes were eagerly bid for.
In the milking section, cows topped at 1380gns for a third calver, giving 31litres and back in calf, selling to Messers Berry. Others sold to 1350gns, Cragyeat More Molly, a fourth calver yielding an impressive 48litres. Thirteen cows went onto break the 1000gn barrier.

In milk heifers sold to a top of 1750gns for Cragyeat Stanleycup Betsy, a month calved and giving 36litres. Fresh calved heifers sold well, with others realising 1680gns and 1420gns.

In-calf heifers were met with keen interest, topping this section was Cragyeat Shottle Buttercup 3, in-calf to Oman Pello and due at the start of November, she realised 1250gns. Another November due heifer sired by Toc-Farm Goldfish and in-calf to Coldsprings Ponder she realised 1220gns, selling to Jim and Oliver Parkinson of Preston. Best in-calf heifers and those closer to calving regularly sold in advance of 1000gns.

The young stock section, including bulling and maiden heifers as well as young heifer calves saw the most interest all day and the fastest trade. Buyers were keen to purchase well grown flashy heifers, showing potential as future milking heifers. A twelve month old REW Seaver sired heifer topped at 850gns with a Val-Bisson Doorman daughter also realised the same money. A six month old heifer, sired by Pictson Shottle and out of the favourite cow family of the Barnes’, the Molly family, sold to 800gns. An Urbain daughter also 6months old, sold to the same price. Young heifer calves were regularly in advance of £300 at 2-3weeks old, whilst the last calf through the ring, Cragyeat Ponder Betty, a 7day old heifer achieved 480gns.

North West Auctions would like to thank the Barnes’ family for entrusting them with the sale, all help from neighbours in preparing the cattle, all sponsors, as well as all customers present on the day and wish Brian & Diane all the best for the future.
