January Dairy Sale sees heifers sell to £3000
The renowned Lancaster January Dairy sale saw another fantastic selection of heifers put before the judge Mr Duncan Horsley of Penrith. The presale show saw a huge turnout with 16 non-halter led heifers in one class. After much deliberation through all classes, the Champion rosette was awarded to Stardale Admiral Vaakje 2, from James Burrow. Bred from 4 generations of VG/EX and sold giving 31litres, realised a final call of £3000 selling to a Messers Smith.
As well as taking Champion, Stardale Admiral Vaakje 2, also won Supreme Champion, claiming the Harold Brooks Rose Bowl. James Burrow first won this award when he was 13 years old, showing testament to the quality of breeding behind the Stardale herd.
The Reserve Champion rosette was award to Shoreline Pagewire Tess from Messers Woodhouse, Millom. This Pagewire sired heifer, bred from 2 gens of VG Cows, sold giving 35litres went on to achieve £1850, selling to the same buyer.
Top price cow, Saltoke Icefyre Violet 59 (VG85) from Richard & Ian Gorst, Bay Horse, yielding 45litres, realised £2000.
A ringside of 28 buyers from throughout the Northern Counties, Scotland, Wales and the Midlands, saw many leaving empty handed. All cattle sold to full value, ahead of vendors expectations. Eleven of the 43 cattle forward sold in excess of £2000, to average £1832 for heifers and £1956 for cows.
To close the sale, a bull from the Stardale herd, Stardale Vettel, a smart flashy sort, bred exceptionally well went on to sell to a final call of £1720, before heading to pastures new in Lanarkshire.
