Prime Hoggs

The trade for prime hoggs was slightly sticky today with a poorer quality of hoggs forward as many people coming to the end with hoggs. The overall market average for prime hoggs was 194ppk topping at 212ppk. A consignment of handy weight Dalesbred prime hoggs from Freddie Woodhouse of Fell End sound well with three pens selling at 205ppk with others selling around the 200ppk.

Spring Lambs

The largest entry of spring lambs of the season today at Lancaster with 145 forward. The spring lamb trade was slightly easier than the previous week with many big meat companies not yet looking to buy spring lambs. The trade topped at 268ppk from Andrew Clarkson of Cock Hall Farm with a pair of Texel lambs. Many pens of lambs selling around the 235ppk-245ppk.

Cast Sheep

Cast sheep continue to be a strong trade with all classes of cast sheep in strong demand. The trade topped at £104 for a Texel tup from Freddie Woodhouse with a pen of Leicester and Teeswater tups selling to £90. Continental ewes sold into the nineties averaging in the eighties with mule ewes selling in the seventies with Swaledale ewes from Brian Carter selling to £64 with other fit ewes selling into the late fifties.

Sheep and Lambs

Similar numbers forward this week as the previous with many vendors holding back for the show and sale next week. Texel shearlings and two shears from John Fox at Blackwood end were easier sold this week making £182 a family. Mule shearlings with twins from Bill Pinder sold to £180 a family with older Texel ewes and twins from Hey & Son, Quernmore selling to £168. The first entry of Mule Hoggs and lambs forward today where hard to place selling to £160.

Prime Bulls

A nice entry of prime bulls this morning, however trade slightly slower on the week, due to the dramatic drop in deadweight prices. Trade topped 211.5ppk (x2) from S & BM Lawrenson & Son, Eagland Hill both being Lim bulls weighing in the 500kg region. A nice blonde from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe, sold to 191.5ppk. British Friesians sold to 153.5ppk from K Whitaker & Son, Bay Horse.
