Show & Sale of Spring Lambs

Spring Lambs

The annual show and sale of spring lambs at Lancaster saw a sale day entry of 67 lambs. The sale day judge was James Cookson who had plenty of quality lambs presented in front of him. The overall champion lamb was awarded to PW & DW Roskell of Springfield House. The champion lamb a 40kg Texel went on to sell for £120. The winner of the Suffolk class was from AG & GM Rowlinson of Low Hall Beck selling to £120. Buyers where cautious of overweight lambs with standard weight lambs in strong demand selling to 300ppk with standard weight lambs average 266ppk and overall sale average being 255ppk.

Prime Hoggs

A smaller entry of prime hoggs forward in Lancaster sold to a strong trade with the market average being 209ppk. The trade continues to be very similar for hoggs with best quality hoggs in strong demand. The day’s trade topped at £103 for heavy weight Texel Hoggs from George Sanderson. Good quality Texel hoggs from P Lawrenson sold to 219ppk with plenty of pens of good sorts of lambs selling around 215ppk.

Cast Sheep

Cast sheep continue to be in strong demand and good to sell with an entry of well over one hundred forward. Sale topped at £106 for a Suffolk from ST Birkett, Hall Croft Barn. Good big meaty continental ewes regularly sold into the eighties and into the early nineties. Mule ewes sold into the late seventies with plainer sorts of ewes looking the dearest on the day with buyers cautious of buying over fat ewes.

Sheep and Lambs

A smaller entry of sheep and lambs forward this week sold to a brisk trade with vendors leaving happy with their trade. More outfits needed to meet the demand of the many buyers around the ring eager to make purchases. Trade topped at £198 from John Fox with Texel x Shearlings with twins with Texel’s with singles from the same home selling to £152. Aged mule ewes with Suffolk twins sold to £175 per family.

Prime Bulls

Half a dozen prime bulls forward at Lancaster saw beef types sell to 185.5ppk from HR & KA Hodgson. A plainer show of dairy bred bulls forward selling to 124.5ppk.
