North West Auctions held their weekly sale of primestock at J36.

The first spring lambs of the season were forward and, with several outlets looking for lambs, an overall average of 234.07p/kg was achieved, lamb peaked at 255.06p/kg and topped at £116 per head for a pair of Charollais lambs, shown by Messrs JA & R Geldard and purchased by Lancaster Meats.

Once again, for the time of year, a larger than expected show of some 1400 prime hoggs and cast sheep were put before a full ringside of buyers who ensured all classes, once again, maintained the recent high rates.

Prime Hoggs - There was a shortage of the best quality hoggs today but an overall sale average of 211.71p/kg with an SQQ of 217.54p/kg was achieved. Top price hoggs went to Mr P Cummings of Burton for a pen of Texel x hoggs selling for £117 per head.

Cast Sheep – A good show of 380 cast sheep were forward with plenty of ewes selling in excess of £100 per head. Mules were once again in demand selling to £92 per head.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot
The weekly sale of sheep with lambs at foot saw over 200 forward with new vendors & purchasers continuing to attend. Strong Texel x ewes with twins from J & R Waller sold to £240 (x2) with others at £210. Only older Mules forward this week reaching £168 (£65/life) with Suffolk lambs from
J & EV Thompson & Son. Next week’s sale to include The Annual Show & Sale of Ewes & Shearlings with Lambs at Foot.

Monthly Sale of Pigs
A keen crowd of buyers saw a rise in trade with all classes selling above vendors expectations. Prime pigs sold to £160 for smart White gilts from AJ & EJ Platt with others £132 from M Archer & Son Ltd. Sows soared to £170 again from M Archer & Son with young boars £108 from Messrs Strong & Preston. Store pigs reached £85 & £83 with weaners particularly good to sell reaching £32 for young white sorts.
