Prime Sheep

1310 Prime sheep were presented to an increased ringside of buyers who ensured all classes met a truly outstanding trade right through the sale leaving an overall market average of 214.13p/kg for hoggs. Once again a large proportion of were good quality well finished hill breed hoggs. Top price was £114 per head for Texel hoggs from Mr David Arnold of Hawkshead and a top price per kilo of 242.5 pence for Beltex x from Messrs Dean & Brennand of Clapham. A fantastic run of Mules from S & M Cooper of Leece topped at a staggering £104 per head and a pen of twelve Scotch Blackface hoggs from the same home sold for £100 per head.

All classes of cast sheep also met a cracking trade with Continental and Mule ewes considerably dearer on the week. Continental ewes topped at £110 for Texels from AR Fawcett of Seascale, closely followed by Texels at £108 from AC & J Butcher of Ulverston. Mules topped at £85 per head with plenty at £78 - £82. Horned ewes topped at £70 for Rough Fell from AE Luffman of Howgill.

Many more hoggs and cast sheep can be sold on a weekly basis to fill orders for a huge ringside of buyers.

Opening Weekly Sale of Sheep with Lambs at Foot
The first sale of the season saw 98 forward selling to a full ringside of local and travelled buyers with many leaving empty handed. A run of 3 crop Texel x ewes with Beltex x twins from AJ & ME Saggers sold to £195 & £192. Correct Mule ewes with Texel/Beltex twins from T Ellis reached £195 & £172. Hampshire ewes with strong single lambs from RN & M Hoggarth sold for £138. Next week’s sale to include 50 Ewes with Lambs plus Flock Dispersal of 40 Texel Shearlings & Mule 2/3 crop ewes scanned In-lamb to Texel due mid April (Hept. P, Fluked, Wormed, FV).
