As the good weather continues and customers make the most of it, a smaller show of prime lambs were put before a full ringside of buyers all with orders to fill ensuring once again all classes and weights met a strong trade. Lambs topped at £107 per head for a pen of Suffolk x lambs from I & ME Askew of New Hutton, closely followed at £106 per head for a cracking pen of pure Zwartable lambs from Mr T Whitaker of Bolton-le-Sands. The first noticeable draws of Mule lambs were forward topping at £87 per head for a pen of lambs weighing 43kgs. Overall 1059 lambs lambs sold to average £87.12 per head.

We also held the show for prime Suffolk sired lambs today which was very kindly sponsored by the Northern Counties Branch of the Suffolk Sheep Society. The judging was carried out by Mr John Bowling of Wigan who awarded the first prize to ST Birkett, Hall Croft.

A larger entry of cast sheep were forward of which a large percentage were horned ewes. All classes were good to sell topping at £116 per head for Texel x ewes from J Hadwin & Son. Some good runs of Continental ewes forward from GH Bell of Kirkby Lonsdale and KE Richards & Son of Howgill which met strong competition. Horned ewes to £56 for Swales and £68 for Rough Fells.

Monthly Pig Sale – An entry of 64 pigs forward with all classes exceeding sellers’ expectations. Sows to £240 from J Noble, Scotby and was purchased by Bowland Pork, Lowgill. Boars from the same home sold to £200 and was purchased by Taylors of Bamber Bridge.  Prime pigs topped at £170 for Gloucester Old Spot from DM Richardson of Penrith. Young weaners & store pigs were particularly in demand with some vendors reporting their weaners up £20-£25 per head on the last sale a month ago. Next month’s pig sale will be on Tuesday 13th August at 10.30am.
