Prime Spring Lambs
A larger show of some 47 Spring Lambs were forward with buyers keen to secure all weights. The sale included the Special St. Georges Day Prize Show for pairs of Spring Lambs which was very ably judged by Mr A Denny of Dennys Butchers, Lyth. Andrew had nine pairs of lambs to judge and after some deliberation he awarded the first prize rosette to a cracking pair of Dorset x Beltex lambs from first time vendors at Junction 36, Messrs B & AC Barnes of Middleton and these went on to sell for £121 a head purchased by the judge. The second prize pair of lambs came from HA Sawrey & Son of Gt Urswick and the two Suffolks made £120 per head. Messrs Sawrey also made the top price per head of £123 again for Suffolk lambs. The top price per kilo was 296.8p for a pair of Texel x lambs from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe. Overall lambs averaged 240.43p/kg which fell well in line with the national trend especially with a lot of lambs being in the 46kg+ bracket.
