Weekly Sale of Store Cattle including the Annual Show & Sale of Suckler Calves

Store Cattle
The annual show and sale of Suckler calves at Lancaster sold to a strong trade topping at £1100. The pre-sale judging was carried out by Jim Whitworth of Bolton-le-Sands who awarded the overall champion Suckler calf to David Prickett of Farleton with a Blonde x steer selling for £1100 to F & B Smith of Masongill with Suckler steers from the same home also selling for £840 and £820. Suckler March born Limousin bulls from David Whitaker of Little Fell selling to £860. The first prized Suckler heifer was awarded to a British Blue x from Andrew Dawson of Lower Brow Top which went onto sell for £780.

The weekly sale of store cattle saw larger cattle continue to be a strong trade with a pen of four Limousin steers from Messrs Dugdale & Sons of Tewitfield Farm selling for £1670 topping the day’s trade with steers from the same home also selling to £1550. Bulls sold to £1180 from Robert Ayrton of Ouzelthorn with a pure bred Limousin 11month old. Heifers sold to a top of £1160 for British Blues from JJ Pennington, White Lee Farm. Black and White steers sold to £1200 from J Lamb at Old Glasson with all black and white steers forward averaging £669 with many smaller weathered steers forward.

OTM and Cast Cattle
Cast cows and OTM cattle sold to a top price of 184.5ppk from JA & R Geldard of Low Faulshaw Farm. The trade for Cast cows and OTM saw good cattle good to sell and in strong demand with plainer cattle and cattle straight out of the parlour more difficult to place as more cattle of that type start to come forward before lying in time. Black and White cast heifers twice sold to 179.5ppk from HG Mackereth and W & S Airey. All cast cows averaged 116ppk to include a large proportion of plainer cattle straight out of the parlour.

Calves & Stirks
A show of calves mainly made up of Black and whites forward at Lancaster sold to a brisk trade. The top price of the day came from Gary Postlethwaite, Riddings selling a Limousin heifer calf for £265. July born black and white bulls from Eddie Newsham of Sellerley sold to £180 with calves in his consignment of the similar age regularly selling between £150 and £170.

Stirks sold to a top price of £490 for a pair of Limousin Heifers from Gary Postlethwaite with British Blue heifers from A Pye of Preesall selling to £465.
