INCREASED DEMAND FOR SPRING LAMBS AT LANCASTER

A good seasonal entry of prime sheep included 711 prime hoggs, 30 prime lambs and several pens of cast ewes.

Prime hoggs saw an improvement in trade on the previous week. Handy weight export hoggs were again in great demand to average 212p/kg topping at 228p/kg to T & E Burrow, Throstle Grove whose £89 per head hoggs were purchased by MJ Birtwistle & Co. butchers of Worsley. The top price per head was £94 for hoggs from S & JE Cornthwaite, Lane House, purchased by Fairfield Meat Co., Wrexham. These were closely followed by P Lawrenson, Walmely Fold at £92 and these were purchased by Lancaster Meats Ltd.

A similar entry of prime lambs met increased demand from butchers and wholesalers and more could have been sold on the day. Spring lambs average 239p/kg which although less than this time last year was an improvement on the previous week. Lambs topped at 259p/kg to PW & DW Roskell, Springfield Farm for Suffolk lambs purchased at £96 by Lancaster Meats. The top price of the day went to JA & R FGeldard, Low Foulshaw who had three pens of lambs selling for £100 per head to Whittakers Butchers, Blackburn and Lancaster Meats.

Cast sheep still selling to an excellent trade to a top of £144 and averaging £81.46.

In the prime cattle ring another small entry of clean cattle met a top price of 199.5p/kg for a Limousin bullock from JA Gardner, Moss House Farm and this was purchased at £1024 by Frank Towers of Wray. Prime heifers topped at 184.5p/kg again to JA Gardner for a British Blue and this was purchased by MJ Birtwistle butchers of Worsley.

A reduced entry of prime bulls found a top mark of 205.5p/kg for a Limousin from J & D Barton & Son, Calcalds Farm purchased by Bowland Foods who also bought the top price per head of £1247.53 for a Simmental bull from A & FM Bolland & Son, Yeat House.
