Suckled Calf Success at Lancaster
Lancaster’s normal weekly sale of store stock included a special spring prize show of weaned suckled calves. The event was kindly sponsored by Wynnstay in association with Pfizer and the judge for the day was Mrs Hannah Mason from Caton. Championship honours were awarded for the second year to RH & C Ayrton, Ouzelthorn with a British Blue x heifer purchased at £1200 by Mr David Scott of Morpeth for an undisclosed customer. Reserve honours went to the first prize bullock from John Dickinson, Springfield for a British Blue x which made £1100.

The sale included a total of 467 store cattle, an excellent entry for the time of year. Trade was slightly easier than the previous week but still very strong. Best price of the day was £1360 for a Limousin bullock from DE & SM Moorhouse, High House. Heifers topped at £1220 for a pen of British Blue from Myerscough College. Store bulls sold to £1170 for an Angus from G Johnson, Jubilee Farm.

The sale included an excellent entry of weaned suckled calves with some tremendous quality animals shown this year.

Cast cows much needed at Lancaster
Another excellent entry of 96 cast cows and OTM cattle were an outstanding trade to average 137p/kg. Nether Hall Farms of Mansergh topped the trade at 209.5p/kg and £1461.08 for Limousin cows. All cattle regardless of grade or type were in much demand. A small entry of cast heifers topped at £1101.75 to Messrs K & DE Woodhouse, Kitchen Ground for a Friesian.

Breeding Sheep
136 ewes with 218 lambs sold to a competitive trade with all vendors very pleased with the prices achieved. £218 was the days top price for Texel x shearlings with Beltex x lambs from ST Birkett with others at £210. Older sheep sold to £195 for aged Mules with Texel twins from JS & S Atkinson with others to £72.50/life. Hoggs with lambs coming forward in greater numbers now with Mules with singles to £170 (x2), £165 from C & N Shearing and £170 from D France.

Calves and Stirks
Another large entry of calves sold to a very competitive trade with many new faces ringside today. Young beef calves sold to £360 for Angus x from JB & JB Lawson with bulls regularly £280+ with heifers to £255 again for AA x from JB & JB Lawson. Stirks sold to £565 for a pen of AAx bullocks from R Gregory with others at £545. Five Blue heifers from AJ Pye sold at £555 with keen interest from local suckler farmers. Black & White sold to £440 for 6m form GM Sedgwick & Son with most £180 - £210 being 3m.o.
