HOGGETS JUMP IN PRICE OVER THE WEEKEND

A shortage of numbers around the country ensured a fast trade on Monday at Lancaster. A similar entry of over 500 prime sheep were of good quality and produced an excellent overall average of 208.31pkg.

A top price of 226pkg was twice achieved. Firstly by P Lawrenson, Walmsley Fold with 46kg Texel Hoggs at £104. Then by R F Morphet, Far Highfield, for a super pen of 34kg hoggs at £77. Both lots were purchased by Roy Schofield for M J Birtwistle, Butchers of Worsley. Mr Lawrenson also showed another pen of Texels to 223pkg (£102.50) this time purchased by Whittakers Butchers of Blackburn.

A similar entry of cast ewes were an outstanding trade to average over £84 selling to a top of £134 to D M Bargh, Bradlow for a Suffolk ewe.

STRONG CATTLE TRADE- BUTCHERS OUT IN FORCE

Another good day in the prime cattle section with the usual excellent ring of retail and wholesale buyers around the ring.

Prime Heifers averaged 205.77pkg. The top price of the day was 212.5 (£1143) for a Limousin Heifer from J A Gardner, Moss House purchased by M J Birtwistle Butchers. Mike Woodhouse Howe Farm showed a British Blue x heifer to 198.5pkg, purchased by C J Bowker, Butcher of Bolton Le Sands.

Prime steers included a strong run of quality cattle from Edward Wilson, Sandgate. He topped the steer trade at 201.50 pkg for a Limousin purchased by M J Birtwistle. Mr Wilson also sold to £1239 for a BB Steer purchased by Frank Towers of Wray.

A reduced entry of prime bulls found favour with the buyers. Messrs Gardner Larbreck Hill topped out at 214.5pkg (£1128) for a quality BB Bull which was purchased by Geoff Riley, Butcher of Rawtenstall. Mr Riley also gave up to £1151 for a Char x Bull from Shepherds Farms, Cockerham. Black and white bulls also sold well to a top of 168.5pkg for a Holstein from J H Towers & Son, Tunstall Hall, purchased by Riley Bros of Dunnockshaw.
