NWA Kendal Auction Mart held their New Year Show & Sale of cattle with over 25 cattle forward for showing presented before the judge Mr Gore of Shrewsbury who made the following awards:

A ringside full of buyers ensured all cattle were keenly competed for with prices achieved in line with other local sale centres. The day’s top price of £1160 was achieved for the Show Champion (pictured above), purchased by the judge. A further ten cattle sold for over £1,000. Heifers topped at £1,020 for pure bred Limousin Heifers from Messrs Freeman, Town End sold for breeding purchased by T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale. A very pleasing average of £800 for all steers was achieved along with £750 for heifers considering the majority of cattle were 8-14 months old. Bulls were easily sold with the best suckler types making £820 for Limousin x from R I Dixon, Low Newton.

The sale started with the new fortnightly sale of rearing calves which continues to attract interest from vendors and purchasers. £330 was the day’s top price for a BBx bull from D W Cottam, Hagg Farm, who also sold heifers to £295. B & W’s sold to keen interest with best 3 week old calves £80 from M H & A R Robinson, Holmescales.

The dairy sale attracted several new purchasers all keen to source replacement stock. The prize for highest priced cow was awarded to A & E Barnes, Brackenfold, who sold a fresh 3rd cavler for £1950, with regular vendor Jeff Burrow, Thursgill selling the best Friesian type heifer for £1,880.

Cast/OTM cattle sold to a very pleasing average of 120p/kg topping at 150.5p/kg (£946) for beef cows, 139.5p/kg (£968) for B&W cows with OTM heifers 175.5p/kg (£1038) and steers 174.5p/kg (£1194).

A pleasing show of 645 store lambs sold to a competitive trade averaging £58.74. Best short keep lambs £72 upwards, topping at £84 from T A Teasdale, Head House. Hill bred lambs experienced a very competitive trade with Rough Fell £72, Swaledale £59.50 and Herdwick £55.50.
