All Prime Cattle at Lancaster on Monday morning were good to sell.  Handy weighted butcher’s cattle met serious competition with steers averaging 186.5p/kg and heifers averaging 184p/kg.  A top price of the day of 194.5p/kg went to T E, J S & S A Carruthers of Red Scar, whose Belgian Blue heifer was purchased by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth Limited, butchers of Diggle at a price of £1,019.   Prime Bulls averaged a very pleasing 177p/kg, selling to a top of 187.5p/kg for a Limousin cross from D W & N M Alderson of High Green, purchased by Bowland Foods Limited of Preston.  Bulls also sold to a top of £1,177 for a Limousin from J & D Barton & Son, Calcalds Farm, again purchased by Bowland Foods Limited.   Another excellent quality entry of Prime Lambs were only a shade cheaper than the previous week which was pleasing considering the falling prices generally at the end of the previous week.  The lighter the lamb, the dearer price.  Standard weight lambs up to 39 kg averaged almost 183p/kg with lightweight lambs, under 32kg averaging 190p/kg.  A top price of 213p/kg went to P Cummings, Holme Field who sold an excellent pen of 12 Texel cross lambs and these were purchased by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth Limited, butchers of Diggle.  Lambs also topped at £84.50 for a pen from T Whitaker, Wild Duck Hall which were purchased by Lancaster Meats Limited.   A much improved entry of Cast Ewes included much greater proportion of hill bred and plain ewes.  Quality ewes were still good to sell, topping at £108 to J A & R Geldard, Low Foulshaw Farm.
