LAMB NUMBERS KEEP RISING AT LANCASTER

North West Auctions Lancaster Mart enjoyed their busiest day of the season so far with an excellent entry of 1821 prime lambs together with 110 cast sheep.  Once again there were eight active buyers in the ring and an excellent trade of almost 200p/kg on average was enjoyed by all vendors.  Good butchers sheep were in great demand.  A top price of £107 per head was reached by JA & R Geldard, Low Foulshaw Farm with Charollais lambs purchased by Yorkshire Country Lamb.  Lambs also peaked at 257p/kg to E Hartley, Hazel Brae for a superb pen of Texel lambs weighing 38 kilos and selling at £97.50 per head to Dunbia, Preston.  Close behind at 241p/kg Mrs Hartley also sold a further pen to Whittakers Butchers of Blackburn.  

An improved entry of cast ewes were as dear as ever to average £81.36 for all breeds including hill sheep.  A top price of £127 went to D & DW Prickett, Farleton House for Texel ewes.  

In the cattle ring trade continues to improve solidly.  An excellent entry of prime butchers heifers averaged 188.22p/kg topping at 209.5p/kg for a tremendous Blonde heifer from JA & J Harper, Capplethwaite Hall and this was purchased by Roy Schofield for Birtwistle Butchers of Worsley.  

A reduced entry of prime bulls were also dearer on the week and many more could have been sold to vendors advantage.  Medium weight bulls averaged 175.86p/kg topping at 182.5p/kg twice.  Firstly to JJ Woof & Sons, Millbeck for a Continental bull purchased by Blacklidge Bros of Chorley and then for a Limousin from Mrs Airey, Old Croft and this bull was purchased by Frank Towers, Wray.  Heavy bulls were also in much demand to average 169.12p/kg topping at 177.5p/kg (£1210.55) to J & D Barton & Son, Calcalds Farm purchased by Bowlands Foods of Preston.
