North West Auctions Lancaster enjoyed the best prime cattle trade for some time.  Several butchers were represented around the ring and this ensured a strong trade for all quality cattle.  Hayden Fortune, Pyethornes Farm topped both the bullock and heifer trade.  His British Blue heifer made 192.5p/kg and was purchased by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth Ltd of Diggle.  Mr Schofield also purchased the top price bullock from Mr Fortune, a Limousin at 187.5p/kg and this was bought for MJ Birtwistle & Co., butchers of Worsley.   An improved entry of prime bulls were also good to sell.  A top price of 174.5p/kg (£1058) went to J & D Barton & Son, Calcalds Farm for a Limousin x bull which was purchased by Bowland Foods of Preston.  Close behind at 173.5p/kg was a Limousin bull from Clark & Johnson, Far Orrest and this made the top price per head on the day of £1137 purchased by Bowland Foods.

In the prime lamb ring trade was much steadier after last week’s flyer.  This was expected with trade having fallen throughout the previous week.  Another good entry averaged 207.5p/kg with standard lambs below 40 kilos averaging 211p/kg.  A top price of 228p/kg went to A & E Clarkson, Cock Hall Farm whose Texel lambs were purchased by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth Ltd and these made £89.  The top price per head went to Mr G Riley, Bolton-le-Sands whose Suffolk lambs were purchased by Michael Lomax of Bolton for £100.

A small entry of ewes were selling at their dearest level for a few weeks to average £86.57 per head topping at £103 to S Wilson & Son, Burrow Heights.  There are plenty of buyers every Monday morning for all classes of ewes and more number are now being sought on each sale day.
