North West Auctions Lancaster held their weekly sale of prime stock on Monday.  Against expectations with trade having fallen through the week since last Monday, it was great to see a much expanded ring of buyers all looking to buy lambs this week.  Remarkably lambs jumped to an excellent average of over 250p/kg with standard lambs averaging 254p/kg.  A top price of 278p/kg went to Andrew Butler, Parks Farm Barn for 39 kilo Texel lambs which made £108.50 and were purchased by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth butchers of Diggle.  Top price lambs of the day were £120 per head from J & M Cottam, Hill Top whose Suffolk lambs were purchased by Michael Lomax for Lancaster Meat Company.

A smaller entry of cast ewes were in much demand to average £87.75 per head topping at £127 to B & J Preston, Ellers Farm for Texel ewes.

In the prime cattle ring as always, best butchers heifers were much sought after.  Heifers averaged 177p/kg. Messrs TH & D Cornthwaite, Low Tarn Green topped the trade at 191.5p/kg for a British Blue heifer which was purchased by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth Ltd.  Messrs Cornthwaite also sold to 189.5p/kg for a Limousin heifer bought by the same good butcher.  A small entry of prime bullocks topped at 182.5p/kg for a Brtish Blue from JA & J Harper, Capplethwaite Hall.

In the prime bull section a reduced entry sold very well on the day with heavy bulls in particular demand.  A top price of 172.5p/kg went to JM & AG Swarbrick, Bensons Farm for a Belgian Blue.
