MARVELLOUS MAY DAY ENTRY AT LANCASTER

A much better than expected entry of primestock was presented at Lancaster on Monday.  There were more buyers in the prime sheep ring for spring lambs this week and as expected trade could not match the previous week’s fantastic sale.  Big lambs averaged 245p/kg with standard weight lambs up to 40kgs averaging 252.3p/kg.  Better grade lambs were in much demand throughout the sale selling to a top of £122 achieved by Andrew Butler, Parks Farm Barn for Texel lambs purchased by Michael Lomax of Bolton.  The same price was also achieved by Alan Bradshaw, Moss House Farm again for Texels (305p/kg) this time purchased by Samuel Howarth butchers of Diggle.  The top price per kilo was 308p also achieved by Andrew Butler for lambs at £120 purchased by Michael Lomax.  
A much improved entry of prime hoggs were a very respectable 217p/kg average & topping at 251p/kg to T & E Burrow, Throstle Grove for Charollais hoggs purchased by Michael Lomax.  Hoggs topped at £114 per head for Texel bred from W & J Livesey, Walker House Farm and these were purchased by B Riley & Sons of Dunnockshaw.  

A larger entry of prime ewes were very dear averaging £91 and topping at £132 to RS & IM Kellet, Mill House Farm.  

In the cattle ring there were 20 prime cattle forward including some good quality butchers cattle.  These sold well to a top 187.5p/kg to A Rayton, Winston for a Blonde heifer which was purchased at £791.25 by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth Ltd butchers of Diggle.  Close behind at 184.5p/kg was a Limousin heifer from DW & NM Alderson, High Green and this was purchased by John Seddon Ltd butchers of Blackburn.   In the prime bull section a small entry of bulls topped at 168.5p/kg to Mrs JA Airey, Old Coft for a Limousin bull which was purchased by G Blacklidge, Chorley.
