FOUR RINGS GOING FULL BLAST AT LANCASTER

Friday sales at Lancaster continue to grow from strength to strength.  This week a super entry of 340 store cattle, 115 cast cows, 200 ewes with lambs at foot and 28 rearing calves were all forward.
The sale began with a magnificent cast cow trade with cows averaging 122p/kg.  All breeds and grades were very dear.  Cows topped at 157.5p/kg to T J Robinson, Rowell Farm for a Continental purchased by Frank Towers of Wray.  Cows also sold to £1086. Cast heifers averaged 141p/kg, topping at 169.5p/kg to S A Hill, Bolton le Sands, and also at £1246.78 to W A Hodgson, Whelpside.  Cast bulls and steers sold to 157.5p/kg and £1244.13 to W J Etherington & Sons, Woodplumpton.

Store cattle were very dear on the day, showing a rise on last week’s fast trade.  Heifers were in serious demand to average £731 throughout the sale. Top price on the day went to PM & ST Entwistle, Lentworth Farm for a strong pen of Limousin cattle.  Heifers sold to £1010 to M Allen, Yealand Conyers for a Charolais.  Store bulls were forward in greater number and topped out at £730 for Limousin bulls from Atkinson & Greatorex, Pyes Bridge.

The Friday sale of Ewes with lambs at foot included a special spring prize show of Hoggs and Shearlings with lambs at foot kindly Sponsored by SAC Farm Business Services.  Judging was in the very experienced and capable hands of John Pennington of Hurst Green. First Prize Mule Hoggs with singles went to W & A Cornall, Bank Farm (photo 1 above) whose top pen went on to make £205.  First Prize Texel Hoggs with singles went to Messrs Shuttleworth, Far Mount Barrow (photo 2 above) which made £175. Top price of the day went to the second prize Texel hoggs with single lambs and these were sold by R Falshaw & Son, Shuttleworth Hall and made a very pleasing price of £210.  It was pleasing to see a ring full of buyers and trade for all sheep was more than respectable on the day.

In the calf ring £245 was the days top price for a British Blue x bull from P Taylor, High Platt Farm with Limousin x heifers to £240 from TM Townley, Knowsley Farm.  All calves were younger this week with nothing much over 4 weeks old.  Black & Whites averaged £69 and many more can be sold to advantage.
