North West Auctions Lancaster Mart enjoyed a very brisk days trading at the last Monday sale before the Easter weekend. The sale included the Annual Prize Show & Sale of Spring Lambs and an excellent entry of almost 80 lambs were forward for judging. Michael Lomax performed the task admirably awarding first prize honours to Andrew Butler, Parks Farm Barn with a superb Texel x lamb which stood out from the field. This made £135 (365p/kg) and was purchased by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth Ltd butchers of Diggle.

Second prize went to R & MW Stirzaker, Station Hotel with a Suffolk x lamb selling at £121 to Lancaster Meat Co. Ltd and third prize was taken by ST Birkett, Hall Croft Barn securing £119 from Whittakers Butchers of Blackburn. Spring lambs were a marvellous trade to average 263p/kg.

A better than expected entry of prime hoggs were not as dear as last weeks sensational trade but still averaged a very respectable 211p/kg with many vendors now at the clean up stage. Good meaty hoggs were in great demand selling to a top of 237p/kg for Texel x hoggs from Andrew Butler, Parks Farm Barn and these were purchased by Whittakers Butchers of Blackburn. Hoggs also topped at £107 and this was twice achieved by J Bargh & Son, North Farm.

Cast ewes were once again a tremendous trade and the increased number certainly suited buyers. Ewes averaged £76 topping at £122 for Charollais bred from JA & R Geldard, Low Foulshaw. In the prime cattle ring all classes of cattle were good to sell. The sale began with an improved entry of prime bulls. There was plenty of quality about this week with a top price of 182.5p/kg achieved by Messrs Clark & Johnson, Far Orrest for a tremendous Limousin bull which was purchased at £1032 by Bowland Foods. Prime bulls also sold to £1067 for Limousin bull from JM & AG Swarbrick, Bensons Farm.

In the prime cattle section good butchers heifers were much sought after by local butchers and the top price 188.5p/kg went to J & ME Bateman, Lowgill Farm for a smart Limousin heifer purchased by MJ Birtwistle, butchers of Worsley. Prime bullocks sold to 175.5p/kg for a Limousin from TH Garnett & Son, New Close and this was purchased by Frank Towers of Wray.
