FUN IN THE SUN AT LANCASTER

The Good Friday sale of store and breeding stock at Lancaster saw the sun shining bright throughout the sale. There was an auction full of buyers and sellers and an excellent atmosphere in all sale rings. A very pleasing Bank Holiday catalogue entry of 337 store cattle with an almost full complement of buyers including one or two fresh faces around the ring. Bullocks averaged £722 topping at £1110 to RF Tyson, Beck Farm for a British Blue bullock. Heifers also sold well on the day to a top of £1040 to Capernwray Parkland Farm with trade staying strong to the end.

There were plenty of bidders for cows & calves and these topped at £1300 for a heifer with bull calf at foot. More units can easily be sold each week at this sale.

There were 32 calves and stirks forward on the day with bull calves averaging £222 and heifer calves an excellent £311 including some very strong Continental calves. Black & White bull calves continue to improve in value and it is hoped this encourages more numbers to come forward each week.

In the cast cow ring the reduced entry was expected due to the disruption to abattoir operations as a result of the Bank Holiday weekend. Nevertheless cows averaged an excellent 113p/kg selling to 139.5p/kg to P Taylor, High Platt Farm for a Limousin cow. Cows also sold to £900 to JE & AC Clarke, Cringleber. OTM heifers averaged 149.43p/kg topping at 141.5p/kg to JK Birkett, White Lund Farm for a Swedish Red & White heifer. Cast steers sold to 154.5p/kg to TJ Robinson, Rowell Farm for an Angus bullock.

Best quality entry of sheep with lambs at foot saw 350 lives through the ring averaging an excellent £168 per unit. All the outfits were dearer on the week with young sheep selling at similar levels to recent sales. A top price of £240 went to B & SE Carter, Cragg End for Texel x ewes with Twin lambs at foot. It was good to see so many pens selling to well in excess of £200 reflecting the strong confidence in the industry at the moment.
