BEST SALE OF THE YEAR SO FAR AT LANCASTER

North West Auctions Lancaster Mart enjoyed their busiest and most successful Friday of the year so far. An excellent catalogue entry of 488 store cattle was well complemented by a large entry of 110 cast cows, 79 lots of ewe with lambs and 55 rearing calves.

Strong store cattle were every bit as dear as recent sales with some excellent prices topping at £1190 to Fred Barnes, Crow Trees for Limousin bred cattle and also for Charolais from H Hesketh & Sons, Ribble Bank Farm. Bullocks averaged £733 throughout the sale. A very strong entry of heifers also averaged £730 selling to a top of £950 to C & B Lowther, Lower Castle O’Trim for a Belgian Blue. A larger entry of store bulls were mostly suckled calves and these sold to a top of £880 to EA & P Duckett & Son, Holme Farm.

A superb entry of 110 cast cows were only a shade less on average at 115.83p/kg for all breeds and grades. Top price of 161.5p/kg went to L & PA Haygarth, Kelleth Rigg for a Blonde x cow which sold for £1246. Cast heifers averaged 143.5p/kg topping at 159.5p/kg to Mrs O Butler, Elm Bank for a Limousin heifer.

A stronger show of calves this week with a larger portion being Black & Whites which averaged £62 on the day. Top price of £405 was paid for Angus x heifer stirks from C & N Shearing, Deepclough with strong heifer calves to £290 from R & A Batarbee, Newhouse Farm. Bulls sold to a top of £325 for a shapely British Blue x calf from WR Clarke & Partners, Cinder Barrow. Beef calves selling to a premium, more needed each week. It is hoped that the strong Black & White bull trade will attract more calves at this time because there are certainly buyers in the market for them.

The best entry yet of ewes with lambs at foot included some excellent quality young sheep as well as mature ewes with lambs. Messrs J & M Wilson, Cooper House topped the trade with 1 crop Mule ewes and twin Texel x lambs selling two pens separately at £215 per outfit. Aged ewes with twin lambs topped at £190 to G & ID Postlethwaite, Riddings. There were more hoggs with lambs forward and these topped at £185 for Texel Hoggs with Single lambs again from Messrs Wilson, Cooper House. More ewes and lambs are needed each week at 12.30pm to supply the growing demand.
