STRONG FINISH AT LANCASTER

There has been something of a late season flourish at Lancaster on recent Monday sales. Average prices have been excellent over the last few weeks and this has helped to create more of a stir in the ring. Despite the fact that many vendors are now amongst the clean up sheep the sale still averaged an excellent 196p/kg with medium weight hoggs above 40kgs averaging almost 205p/kg. A top price of 224p/kg was achieved separately on two occasions. Firstly by Andrew Butler of Parks Farm Barn with a superb pen of Texel hoggs selling for £96.50 to Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth Ltd butchers of Diggle. The same price per kilo was achieved by J Bargh & Son, North Farm who sold an outstanding run of hoggs, this particular pen being bought by Mr Geoff Riley butcher of Rawtenstall.

Cast ewe numbers are continuing to rise as a result of increased competition in the ring. The top price of £136 per head went to JA & R Geldard, Low Foulshaw Farm for pure bred Charollais ewes. There is room for plenty more cast ewes each and every Monday at Lancaster as shown by the overall average which was £74 per head including all hill breeds and plainer ewes.

The prime cattle trade at Lancaster continues to stay strong with the usual problem of not enough quality cattle for the weekly butchers orders around the ring. A top price of 202.5p/kg went to Barbara Rayton, Winston for a very smart Belgian Blue heifer which was purchased at £911.25 by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth Ltd butchers of Diggle. The same buyer also purchased a Devon x heifer from TH Garnett & Son, New Close for 189.5p/kg.

A small entry of prime bulls sold very well on the day to a top of 176.5p/kg for a Limousin from S & BM Lawrenson & Son, Northwoods Farm and this was purchased by Bowland Foods Ltd. Bulls averaged almost 160p/kg which was felt by most vendors to be very pleasing on the day.
