North West Auctions Lancaster Mart had forward a similar entry of prime stock on Monday. The prime hogg trade was simply outstanding averaging 202p/kg across the board with medium weight lambs above 40kgs averaging over 205p/kg. A competitive ring of buyers were going at it hammer and tongs and the hoggs could have been sold three times over. A top price of 228p/kg went to JM & MH France, New House Farm with 41kg Texel Lambs selling to the top price per head of £93.50 purchased by Vion Foods, Anglesey. Lambs also sold to £92.50 for 43kg Texel Lambs from Andrew Butler, Parks Farm Barn and these were purchased by MJ Birtwistle & Co Ltd butchers of Worsley. A small entry of lightweight lambs were in much demand selling to a top of 193p/kg (£54) for pure Herdwick hoggs from T & ME Longton & Son, Lee End Farm.

Cast ewes sold very well to average £64.96 topping at £120 for Continental ewes from C & N Shearing, Deepclough. Cast rams topped at £105 for a Texel from TM Townley, Knowsley Farm.

In the prime beef ring a commercial entry of cattle were a decent trade throughout with many butchers orders remained unfilled. A top price of 179.5p/kg went to J Collinson & Sons, Gift Hall for a Limousin heifer which was purchased by Roy Schofield for MJ Birtwistle & Co. Ltd, Worsley. Messrs TH Garnett & Son, New Close were close behind at 172.5p/kg again for a Limousin heifer which was purchased by Frank Clarkson for CJ Bowker butchers of Bolton-le-Sands. Another decent entry of prime bulls sold well on the day topping at 175.5p/kg twice for Limousin bulls from T Potter & Son, Graining Field purchased by Bowland Foods with one of these bulls achieving the top price per head of £1106. British breed bulls were a shade dearer topping at 144.5p/kg for an Angus bred bull from J & ME Bateman, Lowgill Farm and this was purchased by Bowland Pork, Beef & Lamb, Tatham.
