LANCASTER PRIME STOCK – TRADE BETTER THAN EXPECTED
North West Auctions Lancaster had forward a reduced entry of 860 prime sheep with vendors preferring to be prudent with numbers this week following the end of the recent religious festival.  Fears of a falling trade proved to be unfounded with all buyers in attendance on the day and many desperate to get sheep back to kill on Monday morning.  As a result lambs averaged an excellent 176.5p/kg with lambs over 40kgs averaging 177p/kg throughout the sale.  A top price of 202p/kg (£83) went to P Lawrenson, Walmsley Fold for a lovely pen of Texel x lambs.  These were purchased by Dunbia Preston Ltd.  Other leading prices were a strong pen of Suffolks from Jim Stackhouse, Wardfield and a pen of Texel x lambs from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof Hall both pens of lambs making £80 per head.   A small entry of cast sheep were a very straight trade on the day with once again buyers needing ewes to kill.

A plain entry of sheep topped at £79 for Mules from H Birkett & Son, North Farm.

ANOTHER EXCELLENT BEEF TRADE
Clean Cattle on Monday were once again in much demand with bullocks and heifers averaging 188p/kg for all breeds and including dairy bred cattle.  Leading the way was a quality British Blue steer from JA & J Harper, Capplethwaite Hall which went on to sell for 218.5p/kg to Geoff Riley butcher of Dunnockshaw.  Prime heifers topped at 215.5p/kg for a Limousin from TH Garnett & Son, New Close and this was again purchased by Geoff Riley.   In the bull ring, heavy bulls were in great demand topping at 192.5p/kg for a British Blue from M Dewhurst, Shepherds Hill Farm which was purchased by Bowland Foods of Preston.  Close behind at 191.5p/kg was a Simmental x bull from TD & A Gardner, Larbreck Hill again purchased by Bowland Foods.
