LAMB NUMBERS HOLDING UP WELL AT LANCASTER

Another good entry of 1365 lambs were forward on Monday morning at Lancaster.  Trade began steadily but improved throughout the sale.  Best quality export lambs were good to sell as were well finished heavy lambs. Lambs averaged 170p/kg topping at 194p/kg to Messrs Kelsall, Brown Brook for Texel lambs purchased by Dunbia Preston at £75.50.  Top price per head went to Andrew Butler, Parks Farm Barn, with Texel lambs selling at £83 to Lancaster Meats Ltd   A smaller entry of ewes were well short of the numbers needed by regular buyers.  Pick of the trade were Texel ewes from R D Lambert, Jackson’s Farm at £94.  Good mule ewes were needed on the day selling to £70 to Messrs Atkinson, Sykes Farm  

EVEN MORE RETAIL BUTCHERS LOOKING FOR CATTLE ON MONDAY  

 Demand for prime cattle at Lancaster continues to grow and there were fresh faces around the buying ring to complement the usual retail and wholesale orders.  Trade was marvellous on the day. An improved entry of  Prime Bulls were much sought after with several bulls selling over or towards £2 per kilo.  A top price of 211.5 p/kg  went to Messrs Bateman, Lowgill for a Lim x bull purchased at £1170 by D & A Gregory, Butchers of Bacup. It was a similar pattern in the prime cattle section with TH Garnett & Son selling the pick of the day with a Lim x Heifer at 213.5p/kg.  This was purchased by Roy Schofield for M J Birtwistle & Co of Worsley. Messrs Garnett also sold a Lim heifer at 205.5p/kg to Geoff Riley, butcher of Rawtenstall. Heifers averaged 186.5ppk and many more prime cattle could have been sold on the day.
