LAMB TRADE SHARPER AGAIN ON MONDAY

North West Auctions Lancaster Market had forward a good entry of almost 1200 prime sheep together with 27 prime cattle and bulls.   Lamb trade showed another improvement on the previous week with trade continuing to rise.  Lambs averaged 177p/kg selling to a top of 192p/kg for quality Texel Lambs from D Cockett, Wilson Wood whose 39kg lambs made £75 and were purchased by Dunbia, Preston.  Close behind at 190p/kg were JM & MH France & Son, New House Farm with Texel lambs at £76 purchased by Roy Schofield for MJ Birtwistle butchers.  The top price per head was £82 for Texel lambs from JK & BE Townley, Mearsbeck and these were purchased by Lancaster Meats Ltd.  

An increased entry of cast ewes were dearer on the week selling to a top of £94 for Suffolks from M & RW Stirzaker, Station Hotel.  Cast Rams topped at £99 for a Texel from D Cockett, Wilson Wood.   

SEVEN RETAIL BUTCHERS IN THE CATTLE RING

Demand continue to grow at Lancaster Auction every Monday for best butchers cattle.  This week seven separate retail butchers were represented around the ring and all quality cattle were a marvellous trade on the day.  Prime bulls topped at 193.5p/kg (£1461) for a heavy Limousin bull from John Nutter, Manor Farm purchased by Andertons Butchers, Hothersall.  Mr Nutter sold another of his bulls to Andertons at 195.5p/kg (£1379).   Good butchers heifers were another excellent trade selling to over £2 per kilo and meeting a top price of 206.5p/kg.  This was achieved twice by T Potter & Son, Graining Field for Limousin heifers purchased by Geoff Riley butcher of Dunnockshaw.  Many more quality heifers could have been sold on the day.
