North West Auctions Lancaster Mart held their weekly Monday morning sale of primestock this week.
The hogg trade was fairly bouncing with an excellent ring of buyers and some grand butcher’s orders to fill. Handy weight hoggs upto 40 kilos were in great demand averaging 184p/kg. The top price today was 204p/kg to J Bargh & Son, North Farm whose Texel hoggs were purchased by Geoff Riley butcher of Rottenstall who paid £85.50 for the top pen. Close behind at 200p/kg was ST Birkett, Hall Croft Barn with Texel lambs at £74 purchased by MJ Birtwistle & Co., butchers of Worsley. J Bargh, Old Woodhouse also sold Texel lambs to 200p/kg (£70) this time to Michael Lomax of Bolton. Top price per head was £86.50 for Texels from V & EJ Chadwick & Sons, Sowerby Lodge and these were purchased by Lancaster Meats Ltd.

An improved entry of cast ewes were in great demand to average £68 per head selling to a top of £87 for Suffolks from ST Birkett, Hall Croft Barn. Many more ewes could have been sold on the day.

It was business as normal in the prime cattle ring with a tremendous trade for strong butcher’s cattle against expectations being dearer on the week. Top price of 187.5p/kg was twice achieved. Firstly by EI Wilson & Son, Sand Gate Farm for a Blonde steer which was purchased by MJ Birtwislte & Co. butchers of Worsley. The same price was also gained by TH & D Cornthwaite, Low Tarn Green for a Belgian Blue heifer purchased by Frank Towers of Wray. Close being at 185.5p/kg was RG & H Preece, Thornbush who sold a home bred Limousin heifer to Roy Schofield representing Samuel Howarth Butchers Ltd of Diggle. The top price per head was for a Limousin steer produced by EI Wilson & Son, Sand Gate which made £1134.05.

A reduced entry of prime bulls were several pence dearer on the week and although quite a commercial entry a top price of 154.5p/kg went to Messrs TD & A Gardner, Larbreck Hill Farm for a Simmental bull purchased by Bowland Foods of Preston. The same buyer also gave the top price per head which was £941.49 for a Belgian Blue bull from JM & AG Swarbrick, Bensons Farm.
