HOGG TRADE BOUNCES AT LANCASTER

Prime hoggs showed a significant improvement in price on Monday morning. This was fully expected with a rising market through the previous week and a lack of numbers in all markets. Extra buyers were in the ring and the entry of 443 hoggs could have been sold 3 times over with ease. Standard weight hoggs upto 40kgs averaged and impressive 189.5p/kg selling to 205p/kg for Charollais x hoggs from T & E Burrow, Throstle Grove and these were purchased by Roy Schofield for MJ Birtwistle Butchers. The sale for all weights and grades averaged 185p/kg and the top price of £83.50 went to TE Kidd, Booth Hall whose Suffolk x lambs were purchased by Fairfield Meat Co. Ltd.

A slightly increased number of cast ewes were significantly dearer on the week to average £66 per head topping at £90 for Suffolk ewes from ST Birkett, Hall Croft Barn. More ewes are required each week to satisfy competitive orders.

An improved entry of prime cattle perhaps lacked the overall quality of the previous week but were a very decent trade throughout. A top price of 185.5p/kg was twice achieved. Firstly by Messrs TH & D Cornthwaite, Low Tarn Green and also by Messrs TH Garnett & Son, New Close. Both top price Limousin heifers were purchased by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth Ltd butchers of Diggle. Prime Steers topped at 174.5p/kg for a Limousin from Messrs EI Wilson & Son, Sand Gate Farm and again this was purchased by Samuel Howarth Ltd. Top price per head of the day was £1138.34 for a Limousin steer also offered by Messrs Wilson, Sand Gate and this was purchased by Frank Towers of Wray.

In the bull sections bulls topped at 164.5p/kg for a Limousin presented by Messrs ER & JM Ireton, Holmes Head Farm and this was purchased by Bowland Foods. Top price per head in this section of £1055.24 went to J & D Barton & Son, Calcads Farm for a Belgian Blue again purchased by Bowland Foods Ltd. More bulls were required on the day.
