North West Auctions Monday morning prime stock market has really been hitting the spot with wholesale buyers and butchers. The early start time at 9am is proving very useful for the buyers to top up shortfalls from the previous week and maintain regular weekly orders.

An excellent entry of almost 1700 prime sheep this week could have been sold twice over. Lambs sold to over £2 per kg with Texels from Messrs Townley, Mearsbeck topping at 201p, bought by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth Ltd butcher of Diggle. A top price per head of £86 went to G H Sanderson, Blackleach for Tex x lambs purchased by Michael Lomax of Bolton. There were several pens up over £80.

Light Lambs were dear, averaging 178p per kg and seling to 181p per kg (£56) for lambs from W Pinder Jnr, Lonstripes purchased by Michael Lomax of Bolton.

Cast ewes were again in much demand and numbers were short of buyers requirements.

In the Prime Cattle ring, all classes were dearer again on the week. An excellent entry of heifers included a quality run from P Taylor, High Platt who topped the market all ends up. His best Belgian Blue had much interest eventually selling at 207.5p per kg to Roy Schofield purchased for Samuel Howarth Ltd, Butchers of Diggle. Mr Schofield also bought another Taylor heifer at 194.5p per kg for the same butchers. Close behind was a third heifer from Mr Taylor at 189.5p per kg this time purchased by Mr Schofield for M J Birtwistle & Co Butchers of Worsley. There are orders for more of this type of cattle every Monday.
