North West Auctions Lancaster Mart had forward a better entry of primestock than expected bearing in mind the continued cold snap. An improved entry of almost 1000 prime lambs set off at a steady rate but improved throughout the sale to average an excellent 173p per kilo. Top price of 200p/kg was given to TR Prickett, Hutton Roof Hall for top quality Texel lambs which were purchased at £74 by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth butchers of Diggle. A top price of £87.50 per head was achieved by J Bargh & Son, North Farm whose Texel Lambs went to Lancaster Meats. Close behind at £87 were Texel lambs from AG Butler, Parks Farm Barn which were purchased by Samuel Howarth butcher of Diggle.

Also included in the sale was the Young Farmers Show of Prime Lambs kindly judged by Michael Lomax. The Championship was taken by Charles Butler of Hambleton (pictured above) with a pair of Texel bred lambs. These went on to sell for £87 per head and were purchased by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth butcher of Diggle.

In the prime ewe section a slightly increased entry were good to sell topping at £86 for Texel ewes from K Whitaker & Son, Stirzakers Farm.

In the prime cattle ring a smaller entry than was hoped for were a steady trade on the day. Messrs EI Wilson & Son, Sand Gate Farm topped the trade at 155.5p/kg for a Belgian Blue which was purchased by Frank Towers of Wray. Mr Towers also purchased the top price per head which was a Limousin bullock also from Messrs Wilson and this made £1059.15. Close behind at 154.5p/kg was a Belgian Blue heifer from TH Garnett & Son, New Close which was purchased by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth butcher of Diggle. A small entry of prime bulls sold to 163.5p/kg (£1010.24) for a Blonde bull from J & D Barton & Son, Calcads Farm and was purchased by Bowland Foods Ltd, Preston.
