EXCELLENT PRE-CHRISTMAS TRADE AT LANCASTER

North West Auctions Lancaster Mart had a very strong mornings trading last Monday. The sale began with a reduced entry of prime lambs which was way short in numbers for the number of orders in the ring. Trade was substantially dearer on the week once again with light weight and standard lambs upto 40 kilos in great demand. These averaged 175.31p/kg with the sale overall averaging 170p/kg. Top price of the day was £85 for Texel lambs from RK Ibison & Sons, Higher Yew Tree Farm purchased by Lancaster Meat Company. A superb top price per kilo of 197p went to JM & MH France & Son, New House Farm for top quality Texel lambs purchased by G Riley butcher of Rottenstall. Light weight lambs up to 35 kilos also showed a substantial rise in price due to a strong export trade at the moment. These sold to a top of £55.50 for 31kg Texel x lambs from Messrs Prickett, Farleton House.

There were several butcher’s orders for quality prime cattle every Monday at Lancaster. The pre-Christmas rush for these type of cattle has certainly helped the trade over the last week or two and today was no exception. A very good quality entry of cattle were an excellent trade on the day and several more butchers heifers would easily have found a competitive market. Top price of the day was 182.5p/kg to Messrs EI Wilson & Son, Sand Gate Farm whose classy Limousin bullock caught the eye of Roy Schofield buying for Samuel Haworth Ltd butchers of diggle. Close behind at 181.5p/kg was TH Garnett & Son, New Close whose Limousin heifer was purchased by CJ Bowker butcher of Bolton-le-Sands.

A small entry of cast ewes were at the dearest level for several weeks and it is amazing that not more ewes are forward at this market. Top price ewe of £93 went to RJ Boyren, Moorville with cast rams selling to £103 from WW & D Boow, Corney Hall.
