North West Auctions Kendal Mart held their final Tuesday sale of primestock before Christmas on yet another frozen Tuesday. A better than expected entry of over 1500 prime sheep met a rising trade once again this week. Standard weight lambs averaged 174.5p/kg. The sale also included the special prize show & sale of prime lambs on behalf of Young Farmers. The lambs were forward for judging in pairs and there were quality entries of both lowland and hill breeds. The overall Young Farmers Championship went to Chris Ladds of Grayrigg Young Farmers and his pair of purebred Texel Gimmers met spirited bidding from both the butchers trade and local farmers before being knocked down at a record price of £200 per head (364p per kilo).

The general trade for all lambs was very good on the day and it was good to see an excellent festive atmosphere around the ring throughout the sale. This was helped by the annual sale of Christmas poultry with over 300 turkeys, chickens, ducks and geese forward for sale.

A smaller than normal entry of cast ewes were as always in much demand selling to a top of £80 for Continental ewes from Stockdale Farms, Bowers Farm. Cast Rams sold to £96 for Continentals from JA & J Harper, Capplethwaite Hall.

There was only one dairy animal forward for the last sale of the year. This was a second calved cow from G R Park & Sons, Low Deepslack and went onto make £1250.
