North West Auctions Lancaster Mart had forward a reduced entry of primestock on Monday with several vendors tied up on 6 day standstills as is often the case at this time of year. Those that were able to deliver lambs were very pleased on the day with the substantial rise in prices on the week. Standard weight lambs averaged 162.45p/kg selling to a top of £76 from Messrs M E Wannop & Son, Heaton Hall for Texel lambs purchased by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth Ltd butchers of Diggle. Close behind at £75.50 were pens from J Bargh & Son, North Farm and Exors of S P Pease with lambs purchased by Michael Lomax and Samuel Howarth Ltd respectively. A top price per kilo of 186p went to Mr P Cummings of Holme Fields again purchased by Roy Schofield for Samuel Howarth.

Cast sheep as expected also found a rise in price to average £66 throughout. Heavy ewes were in much demand selling to a top £98 for Texel x ewes from E Hartley, Hazel Brae. Mule ewes were also good to sell topping at £72 from WM Pye, Tarnwater Farm.

In the prime cattle ring a much reduced entry again left local butchers short of cattle. A top price of 187.5p/kg was paid for a Limousin heifer presented by A Rayton, Winston and this was purchased by Mr Steve Seddon, butcher of Blackburn. Prime bulls were a touch better on the week selling to a top of 164.5p/kg for a heavy Limousin from ST Birkett, Hall Croft Barn and this was purchased at £995 by Steve Seddon, butcher of Blackburn.
