Spring Lambs

A larger entry of spring lambs forward this morning saw 200 forward selling to an overall market average of 287p/kg with many pens selling easily in excess of 300p/kg. A busy ring of buyers this week where more lambs could have been sold to the advantage of the vendor. Topping this week’s trade was a heavy weight Suffolk lamb from TA Blair of Blackpool selling to £144. Numerous pens of lambs sold over the £130 mark. Topping the pence per kilogram trade was James Burr of Quernmore selling Charollais lambs to 338p/kg.

Winner of this week’s £5 for the highest priced pen of 4 or less spring lambs went to TA Blair of Blackpool selling Suffolks to £144. The winner of the £10 for the highest priced pen of 5 or more went to A & E Clarkson of Thurnham selling a pen of seven 40kg Texel lambs to £131. Don’t forget this competition is running throughout of the month of May.

Prime Hoggs

There was over 300 hoggs forward, once again, with a mixed quality forward. Well-fleshed hoggs were in strong demand and eagerly bid for. The sale topped at £153 for heavy-weight Texel hoggs from James Burr of Quernmore or 255p/kg. There was plenty of good meated hoggs selling over 235p/kg. Hill bred hoggs saw Cheviots sell to £108 from J & H Davis of Cabus with Scottish Blackface hoggs selling to 244p/kg.

Hoggs required each week with a busy ring of active buyers looking for all specifications.

Cast Sheep

There was a larger entry of ewes forward this morning selling to plenty of trade with five active ewe buyer’s ringside looking to purchase. Topping the trade at £120 were Suffolk ewes from G Riley of Bolton-le-Sands with Continental ewes selling to £113 from CM & CA Jackson of Caton. Mule ewes from the same home topped at £101 closely followed by £97 from J & A Sheerin of Quernmore. Horned ewes sold to a top of £76 from G Blackledge of Chorley.

Prime Cattle

There was one prime animal forward selling to 197.5p/kg for a Hereford from P & A Bell of Pilling.
