RING 1 – Commercial Breeding Sheep
The second sale of breeding sheep saw a large crowd of local and travelled buyers in attendance, keen to secure additional and replacement stock. Mule shearlings sold to a top of £242 on three occasions from N Barker, Burton in Kendal and M&YS Barker, Halton with other strongest end shearlings £220 to £242, nice farming sorts £195 to £210, with all Mule shearlings averaging £197. An eye-catching pen of Aberfield cross shearlings from J Harrison, Slaidburn sold at £245. Texel shearlings sold to £270 from P&BA Langhorn, Ulverston, with other farming sorts generally £185 to £210, all sold averaging £190. Cheviot Mule shearlings sold to £190 and Suffolk cross to £182.
A keen interest in breeding ewes saw the flock dispersal on behalf of CF Hoggarth & Son, Burneside sell one crop Mules to £185, with others at £170 from FI&ME Little, Barrows Green who also sold two crops at £160. Other two and three crop Mules were regularly £140 to £160, with full mouth Mules to £140 from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston. Cheviot Mule ewes sold to £190 from KA Purtill, Wigan. Texel cross ewes sold to £180 from CR Alderson & Son, Mallerstang. Other continental ewes were generally £140 to £160.
The next sale of breeding ewes is on Saturday 19th October being, the Lakeland Fair sale for all classes of breeding ewes, shearlings, gimmer lambs and rams.

The autumn fair of pedigree sheep saw a selective trade with purchasers looking to secure only the best genetics and quality. The Dutch Spotted sale topped at 1050gns for the pre sale show reserve overall and female champion from I&G Lloyd, Tyn Twll. DA Dixon, Grayrigg Foot were awarded male and overall champion with this animal going to sell for 900gns. Gimmer lambs sold to 850gns for lot 122 from J Stead, Richmond, with ram lambs to 680gns for the first prize ram from C Harding, Elm Farm.
Beltex sold to 700gns for a shearling ram from A Hewson, Burgh Head with others to 600gns from R Garth, Peaks View.
Badger Face Texels achieved an 100% clearance, topping at 650gns from B Dakin, Ravenshaw Farm.
Blue Texels sold to 480gns for the overall champion. Shearling rams from J&A Gargett, Wayside with others to 480gns from the same home.
