SPRING LAMBS
The Easter show and sale of spring lambs at Lancaster saw a fantastic entry put before our judge Mr Bill Livesey, after time and deliberation he awarded the first prize and champion rosette to a Charollais cross Beltex from RJ&J Towers, Ingleton with this selling to £215 or 500p/kg. Topping the spring lamb sale was a Charollais cross also from RJ&J Towers, Ingleton selling to £220. Suffolks sold to £170 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth with Dorsets from the same home to £166.
Spring lambs are now required on a weekly basis at Lancaster.
PRIME HOGGS
All hoggs sold to a slightly sharper trade on the week, with an overall average of 370p/kg achieved. Heavy Texel cross hoggs sold to £240 from W&A Cornall, Barnacre with numerous pens over the £200 barrier. Beltexs sold to £210 from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale. Best bred hoggs were keenly sort after with two lots selling to 430p/kg, firstly for Beltexs from KA Purtill, Wigan and then from JM&MH France, Littledale. A large proportion of the sale was made up of hill bred hoggs, with Cheviots to £166 from Barker Farms, Cockerham. A ring full of Mules sold to £164 from F&SG Sanderson & Son, Woodplumpton with other to £160 from W&A Cornall, Bleasdale. 39kg Herdwicks sold to £136 from A&AM Wright, Roeburndale who sold light weight Dalesbred to £128.
CAST SHEEP
A smaller show of ewes forward with all selling to full value. Frist cross Texels sold to £166 from DJ&MC Platts, Caton who sold Suffolks to £140. Mules sold to a top of £118 from W&A Cornall, Barnacre with the best regularly £110 plus. Swaledales sold to £94 from S Park, Halton with other Swaledale to £90 from W&A Cornall, Bleasdale.
SHEEP WITH LAMBS AT FOOT
A flying trade was seen for all ewes with lambs at foot. Aged Texel ewes with Beltex cross twin lambs from TR Gorst, Bay House sold to £310, with other twins from the same home to £295. An outstanding Texel ewe with a single Beltex lamb from the same good home sold to £290, or £145 per life. Other singles from the same home sold to £270 twice. H Swales, St Michaels saw his best aged Texel ewes with singles sell to £260. A run of broken mouthed Mule ewes with young Texel twins from Myerscough College sold to a top of £235.
