J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Sale of Pigs, Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep & Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Tuesday 26th March 2024.

PIGS

The fortnightly sale of pigs saw a top price of £195 and 205p/kg achieved for Large White cross Pietrains from D Nicholson, Cockermouth, with other well finished gilts and hogs generally £170 to £195. Heavy weights were generally £120 to £150. Best light weight pigs selling to £130 from W Stamper, Chipping.
A large number of cull sows forwards sold to £85.
Store pigs sold to £45 from J McEwan, Dumfries with weaners to £450 from GM&JD Pye, Arkholme.

SHEEP WITH LAMBS AT FOOT

150 families sold to a busy ring side of buyers with some leaving empty handed. More families could have easily been sold to the vendors advantage.
Suffolk shearlings with strong Suffolk lambs from J Whitton, Cartmel sold to £350 with aged Texel ewes with twin Beltex lambs to £320 from M Allen, Carnforth. A ring full of three crop Texel ewes with twin Texel lambs sold to £310 from M Carnie, Skipton, with this good home also selling a super pen of Texel ewes with Texel single lambs to £300 (£150 a life). Aged Dorset ewes with Texel lambs from R&E Ladds, Kendal sold to £288.
Cheviot Mule ewes with Texel twin lambs from Kendal College sold to £292. Aged Mule ewes with strong Texel twins from H Cook, Witherslack sold to £265. A ring full of three crop Mule ewes with two week old Texel lambs sold to £252 from M Carnie, Skipton.

SPRING LAMBS

The opening sale of spring lambs saw a small but high quality run forward, we thank our judge Mr Gus Brown and our sponsor MB Nutrition and Carrs Billington. The champion rosette was awarded to the first price Charollais from RJ&J Towers, Ingleton with this going on to sell for £260. A Suffolk lamb from the same good home sold to £232 or 540p/kg. Dorset lambs saw heavies sell to £208 from S&N Waller, Killington with others from the same home selling to £192.

PRIME HOGGS

A very mixed show of hoggs were forward with hard fed and meated hoggs selling to a fast trade, with leaner and grass fed hoggs harder to place. Heavy Texel hoggs sold to £228 from PK&R Woof, Stainton with Beltex cross to £226 from T Stephens, Kirkby Lonsdale. Thirty pens sold over £200. Beltex cross hoggs sold to 495p/kg or £195 from AG Butler, Hambleton with best regularly 450p/kg to 470p/kg. Hill bred hoggs saw Cheviot sell to £196 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet. Mules sold to £175 from DR&JE Wood, Rivington. A pen of heavy Herdwicks sold to £174 from I Benson, Staveley who sold other pens of Herdwicks to £159. Dalesbreds sold to £149 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with Swaledales to £146 from GA Guy, Tebay.

CULL SHEEP

Cull ewes continue to sell to a strong trade, with all forward averaging £117. Pure bred ewes sold to £300 for Texel cross from RA Batty, Selside with other medium types generally £210 to £250. The best first cross sold to £182 for Suffolk cross from DM&D Cook, Ulverston with other heavier end £150 to £175. Mules sold to £174 for a pen full from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston with others at £164 from MJ Shepherd, Kirkby Lonsdale. Other pens of heavy Mules were regularly £140 to £150. Meated medium types were £120 to £135, with all Mules forward averaging £125. Pure hill bred sheep sold to £160 for Cheviots from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston. Swaledales sold to £120, Rough Fells to £114, Lonks to £112 and Welsh to £110. Medium horned ewes were generally £70 to £85, with other the smallest and leanest generally £45 to £60.
21 cull rams sold to £230, with other medium continentals generally £145 to £175. Hill breds sold to £142 for Rough Fells and £108 for Swaledales. Other leaner hill rams are now abundant in numbers, generally £80 to £95.
