Lancaster Livestock Auction: Christmas Show of Calves, Store Cattle and OTM Cattle. Weekly Sale of Calves, OTM and Store Cattle, Friday 8th December 2023.

STORE CATTLE

The weekly sale of store cattle included the Christmas prize show and sale of pairs, with several pens of high quality cattle forward for the show. After much deliberation the championship rosette and receiving the Tom Owen memorial trophy was awarded to a pair of Limousin cross steers from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland by the judge Mr J Crapper, Barnsley, who we thank for his time and expertise. These bullocks later when on to sell for £2080, with these cattle being previously purchased from the J36 Grass Day sale.

Heavy well grown steers continue to exceed vendors expectation, exceeding all other local centres. Aberdeen Angus’s sold to £2000 from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling with British Blue cross to £1980 from Pilling Hall, Pilling and Charolais cross to £1750 from JA&F Nutter, Clitheroe. Others were regularly selling at £1550 to £1700. Dairy bred steers sold to £1380 for Fleckvieh from MJ & LC Lund, Quernmore with Swedish Red and White also selling to £1380 from T&E Garlick, Freckleton. Black and Whites sold to £1360 from R&E Ladds, Kendal. All steers forward today averaged £1390.
Heifers achieved an overall averaged of £1216, with a top price of £1780 achieved for the first price pair of Charolais cross heifer form JD&GM Bracken, Garstang. Other Charolais sold to £1590 from AJ&D Knowles, New Hutton. Limousin cross achieved £1560 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton. Beef Shorthorns sold to £1540 from EW&CR Clegg & Son, Stalmine and Aberdeen Angus cross £1500 from G Sagar & Son, Caton. Heavy well grown heifers were regularly £1580 to £1400.

OTM / CULL COWS

Cull cow trade saw another rise with an overall market averaged of 159p/kg achieved, with beef cows selling to a top of 269p/kg for a young British Blue cross from A Prickett, Farleton. Other heavier well bred beef cows were 199p/kg for a Limousin from P Cummings, Burton in Kendal, D&DW Prickett, Farleton and GR&A Foy, Conder Green. Other beef cows were regularly 175p/kg to 195p/kg with a top grossing today being a Limousin from P Cumming, Burton in Kendal achieving £1464 with others at £1458 and £1394. Dairy cows sold to a top of 174.5p/kg from WG Farms, Cockerham with others at 164p/kg from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel with Holstein Friesians to 159p/kg from GA&A Atkinson, Cantfield, T Taylor, Woodplumpton, Cote Farm Partnership, Nether Kellet and GR Park & Sons, Whinfell. Top grossing dairy cow was a Montbeliarde from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham totalling £1347.
Heifers sold to 259p/kg for a British Blue cross from GR&A Foy, Conder Green, Aberdeen Angus cross from J Oddie & Son, Blackburn and Limousin cross from JC Prickett, Mewith. Other beef heifers were regularly 225p/kg to 245p/kg, with dairy heifers selling to 229p/kg from AD&R Milner, Claughton on Brock. Top grossing beef heifer was an Aberdeen Angus from J Oddie & Son, Balderstone achieving £1781, with dairy heifers selling to £1494 from AD&R Milner, Claughton on Brock.
Steers sold to 269p/kg for a Limousin cross from M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe who also sold Aberdeen Angus cross at £1651.
Cull bulls sold to 269.5p/kg and £2050 for a young Limousin from HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon.

The Christmas prize show and sale of calves saw another record entry of many new and returning customers. The pre sale show was kindly sponsored by NWF Agriculture and judged by Mrs M Easterby, Westhouse, who awarded the prizes as followed:

Bull calves sold to £500 for the show champion being a six week old Charolais cross bull from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale. Other stronger rearing calves sold to £440 for British Blue cross from JP&C Robson, Garstang with Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £440 from Wallbank Farm, Over Wyresdale with Limousin cross to £390 from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall. A large number of medium bull calves sold to £350 from MH&AR Robinson, Old Hutton with British Blue cross selling to £325 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping and Limousin cross to £320 from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham. Younger month old bull calves sold to £295 for a Charolais cross from RT Halhead, Cockerham with Limousin cross to £290 from D&K Haworth, Hambleton. Others were generally £240 to £270. Dairy bulls sold to a top price of £200 for a five week old Montbeliarde from GJ&G Billington, Garstang who sold others at £190. Black and whites sold to £165 from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham, AD&R Milner, Claughton on Brock and JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green. Medium rearers were £85 to £120, with the younger end £40 to £60.
A consignment of three month old Aberdeen Angus bulls from J&G Thornley, Kirkham sold to £590, with others at £570 and £540. British Blue cross sold to £570 from G&ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel.
Heifer calves sold to £355 for the reserve champion being a British Blue cross from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Other stronger rearers sold to £315 for a Limousin cross from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall. Mediums rearers sold to £280 for British Blue cross from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with Limousin cross to £270 from D&M Foster, Out Rawcliffe. A large number of younger heifer calves forward sold to £265 for British Blue cross from MH&AR Robinson, Old Hutton with others regularly £210 to £240. Native sired heifers sold to £240 for a six week old Aberdeen Angus cross from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping.

Business as usually next week with all classes of stock required to meet buyer demand, with the sale being the last cattle sale of 2023. Catalogued entries required by Monday 11th December.
